We'll miss you, Elf...

Elf passed away at around 9:05 am Saturday morning, April 15th, 2006. It's been so hard watching his health decline. Every day he slept a little more and played a little less than the day before. I helped him move around, and made sure he was always comfortable. I gave him lots of love, and as many raisins as he desired. Momoko kept close watch on him too.

The day before Saturday, he no longer had the strength to move, and was no longer interested in food, water, or treats. I held him last night and this morning and comforted him. By then, he was pretty much in a coma. I took him to the vet Saturday morning to end his suffering. I held his paw during the procedure. He's at peace now... I miss his little ferret face.

Thank you everyone for your support during this difficult time. It's so sad that the chemotherapy was only able to give him only five more months, but I have no regrets. I did everything I could, and I'm thankful I was able to give him give him that extra time to enjoy life a little longer.

Later in the evening, I took him over to my parents house to hold a funeral and burial. There was a little plot of land prepared for him in the backyard next to my cat Dixie. I don't know if they necessarily liked each other (Elf thought she was pretty interesting though), but at least he won't be lonely. I buried him with his most prized possessions, including 19 little toy mice, a monster toy that jingles, the headphones he coveted and cherished so much in life, and a couple of items he wanted but I could never give him for health reasons including a candle, a stick of gum, a rubber band, and a plastic eraser. I don't really believe in an afterlife, but hopefully wherever Elf is, he's in a happy place, free of pain.

The third volume of Peach Fuzz is all about my little prince. It's probably going to be difficult to write without him around, but at least a part of him will be able to live on in the world of fiction, where I'll be able to immortalize all his little quirks and curiosities.

He was 4 years, and 8 months old.
